How do I report Phishing and Junk email?

Body

Overview

You can easily report junk and phishing emails right from Outlook using the report message button. These emails will then be reviewed by the STC IT department and also Microsoft to help train and improve our filters. To submit emails you should have a button on your Outlook ribbon that is labeled “Report Message”. Please use this new option instead of forwarding the emails you receive.

Highlight the email message you want to report and click the Report Message button. A drop-down menu will appear giving you several options:

Junk

Junk mail isn't necessarily malicious, and is often advertising for products you don't care about. Typically, junk mail doesn’t ask you for personal data such as user names, passwords, and account numbers.

This option will mark a message in your inbox or any subfolders as junk and move it to your junk email folder. The first time you report a message, a dialog box will pop up and ask if you want to send the message to Microsoft to help fine-tune the Exchange Online spam filters. Make sure that Automatically send reports is selected and hit save.

Important Note: Regularly check your Junk Email folder and use the Report Message button to correctly identify messages miscategorized as spam if your messages have been affected.

Phishing

A phishing email might appear to be from a bank or another entity asking for your personal data. In some cases, phishing emails will (falsely) notify you that your account has been hacked and ask you to change your password or provide your account number or credit card information.

This option works in the exact same fashion as the Junk button, but it is intended for any type of phishing message that you might get. When marked as phishing, a copy of the message will be sent to both Microsoft and the STC IT Department. The first time you click the Phishing option, the options dialog box will pop up. Make sure you select automatically send reports.

Not Junk

This option works when you are in your Junk Email folder and want to report a false positive. This will send the message back into your inbox and help train Microsoft about what is and isn’t junk.
